Description:
Perennial herb, up to 80 cm tall, growing from a horizontal, woody rhizome. Leaves in a basal rosette, linear, up to 18 cm long, flat, white pubescent. Peduncle densely white-pubescent and with small leaf-like bracts. Inflorescence unbranched, fairly dense with flowers solitary at the nodes. Tepals white, c. 13 mm long, 3-veined; stamens shorter than perianth. Capsule obovoid 6-7 mm long, transversely ridged.

Derivation of specific name: transvaalense: from the Transvaal, South Africa
Habitat: In grassland on rocky ground.
