Description: |
Robust perennial climber, growing from a large tuberous rootstock. Older stems woody; milky latex present. Leaves opposite, elliptic-oblong, 10-30 cm long, cordate at the base, petiole and veining below often coloured reddish-purple; petiole 3-5.5 cm long. False stipules with stiff fimbriae between each pair of leaves (image 1). Flowers in axillary inflorescences. Corolla lobes c. 14 mm long, reddish-purple on the inside, often with a greenish margin., Fruit in paired, spreading folicles, up to 10 × 4.5 cm, velvety on the outside. |
Notes: | It is widespread in Zimbabwe but threatened in South Africa, due to over collection for medicinal purposes. |
Derivation of specific name: | whitei: after A.S. White, a South African farmer, who sent the first plants to Kew, where it was described as a new species. |
