Common names: | |
Frequency: | |
Status: | Native |
Description: |
Robust terrestrial herb up to 1 m tall. Leaves 8-10, lowest sheath-like, next 2-4 large, up to 28 × 7 cm, broadly lanceolate; remaining leaves much smaller, becoming bract-like along the stem. Inflorescence 10-24 cm long, fairly densely many-flowered. Bracts up to 25 mm long, reflexed. Flowers white, sometimes flushed with pink. Sepals and petals pointing forward. Lip convex, forming a wide-mouthed hood; spurs 30-65 mm long. |
Notes: | Zimbabwean material, formerly included under S. hallackii subsp. ocellatum (Bolus) A.V. Hall. normally has longer spurs than that from South Africa or Malawi and the flowers are mostly white in stead of rose-pink, pink or mauve. It has recently been placed under a newly described subsp. ballii (van der Niet & P.J.Cribb) van der Niet & P.J.Cribb, (KB 61-2, 2006*). It is not clear whether all known Zimbabwean specimens now fall under subsp. ballii in which case subsp. ocellatum is longer be a Zimbabwean taxon. (*) In the original publication (van der Niet & P.J.Cribb in Kew Bulletin 61-2: 261, 2006) the new taxon was erroneously described as S. hallackii var. ballii van der Niet & P.J.Cribb. This was later rectified as S. hallackii subsp. ballii (van der Niet & P.J.Cribb) van der Niet & P.J.Cribb |
