Description: |
Terrestrial herb 40–80 cm high, growing from an ellipsoid tuber up to 5.5 cm long. Main leaves 3-5 on a separate sterile shoot; lowermost 1–3 leaves sheathing; upper leaves lanceolate or ovate, 6–15 cm long. Flowering stem with 10–15 sheathing leaves up to 10 cm long. Inflorescence narrowly cylindrical, densely many-flowered, 8–30 cm long. Flowers deep red, pink or rarely white; bracts up to 25 mm long at base of inflorescence, reflexed. Sepals and petals curled under. Median sepal oblong, 4.5–7 mm long, rounded at apex; lateral sepals oblique and slightly longer. Petals 4–6.5 mm long. Lip globose, 5.5–7.5 mm long, slightly reflexed at the apex, fleshy with a narrow mouth. Spurs 8.5–17 mm long, sometimes with a pair of vestigial spurs c. 1 mm long in front of them. |
