Description of the genus

Glabrous, ± succulent, annual or perennial herb. Leaves alternate, entire, apiculate. Inflorescence a terminal cyme. Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual. Perianth segments 5, free. Conspicuous petaloid staminodes present (leading to an impression of a large number of petals). Stamens many. Ovary superior, of 5 united carpels. Styles 5. Fruit a 5-valved, loculicidal capsule.

Worldwide: 3 species: two in Southwest and Southern Africa, the other in tropical Africa and Asia

Zimbabwe: 2 taxa.
