Perennials. Inflorescence a solitary raceme; raceme dorsally flattened, stout; internodes narrowly oblong to clavate, the summit crater-like with a lobed scarious rim. Sessile spikelet: callus oblique, conspicuously barbate, the hairs exserted to form a ring around each node; lower glume with sharply inflexed margins becoming keeled towards the apex, usually with the nerves raised into longitudinal ridges running the whole length of the glume, entire at apex; upper glume awnless; lower floret male; upper lemma entire and awnless. Pedicellate spikelet about as long as the sessile spikelet; awnless or rarely with a small awn (up to 5 mm) from the lower glume. Worldwide: 5 species in tropical Africa Zimbabwe: 1 taxon. |
