Description of the genus

Perennial grass (in ours) confined to shady places in evergreen forests. Inflorescence a diffuse panicle. Spikelets dorsally flattened, 2-flowered. Glumes 2, subequal, deciduous. Lower floret bisexual or male; upper female or bisexual. Upper lemma crisply chartaceous to crustaceous.

Worldwide: 50 species, mainly in tropical regions

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
