Description of the genus

Perennial (ours). Inflorescence of (1-)2-4 digitate 1-sided racemes bearing imbricate spikelets on a flat rhachis. Spikelets strictly 1-flowered or with a rhachilla-extension and a minute vestigial floret, laterally flattened, sessile, alternate in 2 rows, disarticulating above the glumes. Glumes subequal, 1-nerved, membranous, as long as the spikelet, divergent, acute to shortly awned. Lemmas shorter than the glumes, membranous, ciliate on the nerves, 2-toothed at the apex with a flexuous awn from the sinus, the awns at length beautifully braided.

Worldwide: 2 species from Africa and Madagascar through Arabia to India
