Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence a lobed or spike-like panicle. Spikelets 2-many-flowered, broadly cuneate to circular, tardily disarticulating beneath each floret. Glumes coriaceous, 3-7-nerved, acute to shortly awned. Lemmas coriaceous, 5-9-nerved, clavate-hairy on margin; emarginate to acute, rarely with a brief awn.

Worldwide: c. 10 species in South Africa
