Description of the genus

Herbs or soft shrubs. Inflorescence terminal or axillary, thyrsoid or spicate. Bracts and bracteoles small. Calyx actinomorphic, 5-lobed. Corolla 2-lipped; upper lip 2-lobed with distinct rugula; lower lip shortly 3-lobed with 2 raised ridges on the palate. Stamens 2, fertile, 2-thecous; staminodes 0. Pollen grains spherical.

Worldwide: c.50 species, Old World tropics to Arabia

Zimbabwe: 4 taxa.
