Description of the genus

Hemiparasitic annual or perennial herbs, usually erect and hispid, turning black when dried. Leaves opposite or alternate, sessile or ± so. Flowers solitary in upper axils. Calyx campanulate, 5-lobed. Corolla 5-lobed. Stamens 4, didynamous; filaments all bearded or the 2 larger ones only or all glabrous; anthers 2-thecal. Fruit a capsule.

Worldwide: 40 species in tropical Africa and Asia

Zimbabwe: 10 taxa.
