Description of the genus

Perennial forest grasses with usually flaccid leaves. Leaf-laminae usually inconspicuously and irregularly tessellate. Inflorescence a large, open panicle, erect or nodding. Spikelets solitary, pedicelled, slightly compressed laterally; florets 1 or 2(4). Glumes 2, persistent, subequal, 1-3-nerved, membranous. Lemmas exceeding the glumes, firmly membranous, dorsally rounded. Paleas c. as long as the body of the lemmas. Caryopsis oblong in outline, ventrally longitudinally grooved.

Worldwide: Three or four species in Africa and Madagascar.

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
