Description of the genus

Aquatic herb; tuber obovoid. Leaves submerged, very variable, linear, narrowly lanceolate or ovate. Inflorescence a spike to 13 cm long; fragrant; densely or laxly flowered; spathe caducous. Flowers minute, facing all directions; tepals white, pink or mauve. Fruit densely packed, terminally beaked.

Worldwide: 43 species in the Old World tropics

Zimbabwe: 5 taxa.
