Description of the genus

Evergreen tree. Leaves very glossy above. Inflorescences axillary, solitary or in few-flowered cymes. Petals 10, in two rows, the outer larger and thicker than the inner. Stamens 10, united into a tube. Ovary ellipsoid; ovules 10-31. Fruit a berry.

Worldwide: 3 species from Ethiopia southwards to South Africa

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
