Description of the genus

Small trees or shrubs. Leaves entire. Flowers zygomorphic, in terminal and axillary racemes. Sepals unequal, 5, the two lateral ones (wings) larger and petaloid, free. Petals 3 (occasionally 5 with 2 vestigial), free. Stamens 8. Ovary 1-locular. Fruit an indehiscent samara, usually 1-winged but sometimes with a second rudimentary wing. Seed 1, ecarunculate.

Worldwide: 80 species in the tropics (excluding Australia)

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
