Description of the genus

Glabrous, rhizomatous perennial herbs. Inflorescence a pedunculate panicle. Perianth petaloid, marcescent. Fruit a shiny blue berry. Seeds glossy, black.

Derivation of name: from Latin: dianella the diminutive of Diana, the goddess of hunting.

Worldwide: 20 species in tropical eastern Africa, Indomalesia and Madagascar.

Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa.
