Description of the genus

Shrubs with alternate evergreen leaves. Flowers white in terminal panicles, 5-merous; calyx persistent, campanulate; corolla ovoid, constricted above, 5-saccate at base alternately with the sepals, 5 angled in bud. Fruit a globose capsule; seeds few in each cell.

Worldwide: 7 species native to mountain regions of east and southern Asia, eastern North America and Cuba.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
