Description of the genus

Epiphytic, rock-dwelling or terrestrial herbs, offsets often present. Leaves in funnel-shaped or tubular rosettes fleshy, often banded or spotted with scales; bases sheathing; margins spiny; apex broad. Inflorescence sometimes branched; scape curved; apex usually pendent; stalk often scaly; scape bracts large, often reddish. Flower bracts small or absent. Fruit a berry.

Worldwide: C. 55 species, native from southern Mexico to northern Argentina.
