Description of the genus

Bamboo with underground rhizomes. Stems up to 5 m, terete except just above nodes; nodes with 1-many lateral branches. Leaves up to 3 cm wide, usually glabrous, rarely hairy, mostly with 2-7 veins on either side of the midrib.

Worldwide: 23 species native to East Asia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
