Description of the genus

Epiphytic or hemi-epiphytic herbs; mostly climbing with aerial roots; stems with milky latex. Leaves simple or variously divided into 3-11 leaflets; petiole forming a leaf sheath at base. Inflorescence axillary, solitary or in groups 1-11; peduncles erect in flower, pendulous when fruiting; spathe fleshy convolute, notably narrow at middle; lamina whitish green, opening when mature; spadix shorter than spathe. Flowers perianth absent. Fruit berries, united to form an ovoid syncarp. Seeds 1, ovoid or obovoid.

Worldwide: 35 species in tropical America.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
