Description of the genus

Shrubs or small trees. Leaves opposite, persistent and leathery, leaving copious leaf scars. Inflorescences of axillary racemes or small heads. Calyx 4-lobed. Corolla with short tube and 4 spreading lobes. Stamens 2, exserted. Ovary with septum extending longitudinally. Capsule dehiscing septicidally.

Worldwide: 90 species in Australasia (especially New Zealand), Papuasia and temperate S America

Zimbabwe: 3 cultivated taxa.
