Description of the genus

Erect or prostrate herbs. Leaves whorled or opposite on the lower stem, alternate above, sessile, base often running down onto stem; margins often serrate, or entire. Inflorescence of terminal racemes of solitary flowers in axils of upper leaves. Calyx deeply 5-lobed; lobes subequal, lanceolate; corolla 2-lipped, with short, broad tube bearing 2 small pouches on the lower side. Fruit subglobose, dehiscent by 2 valves. Seeds often pitted.

Comment: In addition to Angelonia salicariifolia, Biegel (1977) lists Angelonia hybrid and Angelonia cv. 'Alba'. For the time being I have not created separate pages for these taxa.

Worldwide: 25 species native to tropical America, the majority in Brazil.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
