Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs, evergreen; roots woody; stems erect or spreading. Leaves alternate, cauline, persistent, petiolate; ochrea often deciduous, membranous to coriaceous; lamina lanceolate to round, or transversely elliptic; lamina entire. Inflorescence raceme-like, terminal, pedunculate; pedicles present. Flowers base stipe-like; perianth white or greenish-white, campanulate, glabrous; tepals 5, proximally connate, sepaloid. Fruit achenes, usually included in fleshy perianth tube, brown to black, bluntly trigonous, glabrous.

Worldwide: 120 species in tropical and warm regions of America
