Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs, erect. Leaves alternate, entire, sessile to subpetiolate. Flowers regular to very slightly irregular. Flowers solitary, terminal capitula with bracts at the base; bracts brown in male flowers and floral in female flowers; perianth cylindric tube very short. Fruit an ovoid achene, or a samara, may be compressed.

Worldwide: 79 species in South Africa
