Description of the genus

Stout perennials. Lower leaves basal with long petioles; upper leaves progressively reduced, the uppermost almost bladeless. Umbels large, compound, with many rays, subumbels dense with many white or greenish-white flowers; bracteoles linear or filiform. Fruit ovoid, usually flattened dorsally.

Worldwide: c. 110 species in the Northern hemisphere.
