Description of the genus

Shrubs, erect or trees. Stipules small and inconspicuous. Leaves mostly shortly petiolate; lamina entire or holly-like, coriaceous to membranous. Inflorescence corymbs or umbels, sometimes flowers solitary; pedicels equal or usually much longer than peduncles. Calyx 6-10 glandular; petals unequal, glabrous, dentate or fimbriate, often ciliate, or some of them entire. Fruit drupaceous, normally of 3 nutlets and 3-seeded.

Worldwide: 40 species in tropical America.

Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa.
