Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, clump forming, from a spreading rhizome. Leaves many, basal, sessile, 2-ranked; bases sheathing; lamina long-linear, keeled; apex acuminate. Inflorescence 2 in terminal helicoid cymes, or solitary. Flowers diurnal, slightly irregular, showy; tepals 6, connate basally into a short tube, distinct parts imbricate, spreading. Fruit a capsule, leathery dehiscent. Seeds black, in 2 rows in each valve.

Worldwide: 18 Species in South East Alps, Siberia to temperate East Asia.
