Description of the genus

Shrubs, silky-pubescent or villous. Leaves alternate, simple and recurved to suborbicular. Flowers 1-4 on axillary peduncles. Calyx shaggy, with a shallow tube, sometimes split on one side; lobes unequal. Petals often bi-lobed with a deeply concave, linear claw, purple, pink or white; wings with a curved linear claw; keel usually convex on one margin and straight on the other with a straight flat claw. Fruit a pod, ovoid. Seeds with fleshy, collar-like aril.

Worldwide: About 25 species, mainly in the Western Cape extending eastwards to KwaZulu Natal.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
