Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, deciduous; corms depressed-globose. Leaves several, 2-ranked, basal and cauline; lamina lanceolate to linear, mid-vein usually prominent. Inflorescence a spike or panicle taller than the leaves; flowers 2-ranked, zygomorphic, rarely actinomorphic, orange, red, rarely cream to pale yellow or white; corolla trumpet-shaped; base tubular, curved, flaring from base upward, 6-lobed above. Fruit a capsule, oblong, globose or spindle shaped.

Worldwide: 52 species in South Africa.
