Description of the genus

Perennial herbs; stems tuberous, subterranean, often stoloniferous. Leaves radical with a long petiole. Inflorescence usually dense with large pilose bracts. Flowers yellow; perianth segments sub-equal, densely villous outside. Fruit a berry, crowned by enlarged persistent perianth. Seeds subglobose, testa shiny or densely verruculose.

Worldwide: 7 species in tropical and sub-tropical Asia to northern Australia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
