Description of the genus

Monoecious, deciduous trees. Leaves serrate with aristate teeth. Male flowers in erect catkins; female flowers in the lower part of the same catkin. Male flowers: perianth 6-lobed; stamens 10-20. Female flowers: c. 3 in each cupule; ovary 6-locular; styles 7-9. Fruit 1-3, brown, completely enclosed in a prickly cupule, which splits into 2-4 valves.

Worldwide: 10 species in northern temperate regions.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
