Description of the genus

Trees with flattened branches; upper side convex, underside concave. Leaves of 2 types; flattened facial leaves and folded lateral leaves; juvenile leaves linear, adult leaves scale-like. Seed cones globose, ripening in about a year, then opening; scales 2-12 attached near the middle. Seeds up to 5 per scale, 2-winged.

Worldwide: Seven species, native to the moist middle latitude forests of China, Japan and eastern and western North America.

Zimbabwe: 3 cultivated taxa.
