Description of the genus

Trees with copious latex; branchlets thick and nearly fleshy. Leaves alternate or spiral, at ends of branches; long petiolate lamina with entire margins. Inflorescence cymes 2- or 3-branched, pedunclulate, terminal; bracts usually large; deciduous before anthesis. Flowers fragrant, waxy; calyx small without glands; corolla white, yellowish, pink or red; funnelform, tube narrow, hairy inside; lobes overlapping to left. Fruit paired follicles; cylindric, elongated. Seeds numerous, flat with a membranous wing.

Worldwide: 7 species in tropical America
