Description of the genus

Climbers, usually dioecious, with spirally twisting stems. Leaves toothed. Flowers unisexual (rarely bisexual), solitary or in cymes. Fruit a juicy berry.

Derivation of name: from Greek: actino- meaning rayed, referring to the radiate styles.

Worldwide: 40 species in Indomalesia and East Asia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
