Description of the genus

Shrubs or small trees. Leaves simple, opposite; margins entire or toothed; blade often showy, variegated or coloured. Inflorescence a terminal short panicle of subsessile cymes, or of axillary and solitary flowers; bracts shorter than the calyx; calyx small with 5 shallow, equal lobes. Corolla red or purple, cylindric, strongly 2-lipped; tube curved. Stamens 2. Ovary bilocular. Fruit a capsule. Seeds 2-4, compressed.

Worldwide: 10 species in Australia and SW Pacific

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
